New affordable homes built in Britwell
Disused garages have been transformed to provide much-needed affordable housing in Britwell.
Five sites on the estate, which were built in the 1950s and had fallen into disrepair, have been replaced by six new family homes.
Slough's MP, Fiona Mactaggart, council leader Rob Anderson and Cllr James Swindlehurst, went to have a look at the site on Friday.
Sovereign Housing Association, working closely with Slough Borough Council (SBC), to completed the construction of the three and four bedroom houses at Cecil Way, Wentworth Avenue, Rokesby Road and Monksfield Way.
Roger Keeling, from Sovereign, said: "These houses for general needs rent are able to accommodate up to 37 residents, and so will have a positive impact on housing waiting lists in the borough.
"Given the limited amount of land available for housing developments in the town, it’s important to make use of underutilised sites like these."
The scheme cost £1.1 million with £444,000 coming from the Homes and Communities Agency, £70,000 from SBC and the remainder from Sovereign.
Cllr Swindlehurst said the 'garage strategy' was a great way of meeting the increasing demand for affordable housing and that underused garage sites attract 'anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping'.
