Protestors hit out at council's decision to close furniture shop
Angry managers of the Slough Furniture Project (Homemakers), Wentworth Avenue, Britwell, complain they were given little notice last week that the 18-year-old project must vacate its premises to make way for the Britwell Regeneration development. They held a protest today against the council's plans.
The shop, which sells cheap furniture to people on benefits, must shut by March 31.
Project manager Norma Palmer says two alternative sites, with rents of £9,000 a year, are ‘far too small’ for their needs.
Mrs Palmer said: “The council has given us no time to raise funds. We needs two thousand square feet of space for our furniture and clothing items.”
She added: "The council, has given us faith, hope, but no charity.”
A spokesman said: “We are trying to find them alternative accommodation.”
Deputy Mayor Cllr Chrissy Small said: “It would be a shame to see this precious service go under, but we are living in a world of self-funding.”
