UPDATE: Charity shop chairman walks out of meeting

Homemakers Furniture ShopA charity worker walked out of a council meeting last night after failing to get assurances that the Slough Furniture Project (Homemakers) has a future.

Carol Weeden, who has been chairman of the project for the past six months, said she was unhappy with the official response from Cllr Roger Davis, chairman of the licensing committee.

The full council meeting was held at The Centre in Farnham Road, Slough.

Mrs Weeden and her colleagues are furious that the shop, which sells second-hand furniture and clothes to people on benefits, must close and make way for a temporary off-licence during the Britwell regeneration.

She said: “We are being shoved out and they don’t care, and they are putting two drinks shops together when there is already community unrest and drunkenness.

“They have offered us alternative premises which are far too small for our needs.”

She added: “The new flats planned for Wentworth Avenue will house people on benefits, and these people will need our furniture. “

Petitions have been launched at the shop in Wentworth Avenue, on Facebook and on online sites.

Council bosses say they are trying to find suitable and alternative sites.

A protest was held last week against the plans.
