Kendall recovers from injury to become regional champion while clubmate Staunton also strikes gold

IT WAS a golden weekend for talented Maidenhead gymnasts Max Kendall and Jack Staunton at the British Gymnastics South Region Championships in Portsmouth.

Seeing off competition from the best young gymnasts from across the region Kendall was at his fluid best across all six apparatus to become under-12s South Regional champion.

Max won the u10s championships two years ago and returned to re-claim his crown with a personal best score of 68.05. Last year he was unable to compete because of an elbow injury. However, two operations later Max looked back to his best as he regained his title and won individual gold medals on the floor, pommel and rings.

“We’re just delighted to see him back in training,” said Max’s mum Valerie Kendall.

“He injured himself doing a high bars somersault dismount and just landed badly, putting all his weight through his elbow.

“But he’s fit again now and it’s credit to the surgeons at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. It’s great to see him back and doing well and hopefully he can stay injury free over the coming years.”

Furze Platt pupil Jack Staunton competed in the under-16s development competition, despite being just 12 years of age and came fourth in the all-round competition with a score of 57.40.

Having narrowly missed out on a medal in the all-round competition Jack showed character to come back and take top spot in the vault competition and then secured silver in the parallel bars.

Jack’s proud mum Nicola said: “The boys are great friends as well as training partners and it’s brilliant to see them deliver personal bests.”

The two boys train for between 15 and 20 hours each week and are now looking to expand their skills for national grade competitions later in the year.

“They’ll be training (at Bulmershe Gymnastics Club) over the summer and working towards the competition season which starts from September,” added Valerie.
