Woodley United 2, Marlow United 1
Two defensive lapses proved fatal for Marlow United in the final of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate cup on Saturday.
United came into the final against Woodley United, who are set to play two divisions above them next season, as heavy underdogs, but they took the lead when Wes Sutherland forced the ball over the line following a spill from the Woodley keeper just before half-time.
Weariness from their first half exertions set in, however, and Woodley’s equaliser arrived in the 70th minute when keeper Callum Akerman clattered into his own man attempting to clear the ball and Horsecroft was gifted the simplest of tap ins. Woodley struck the decisive blow in the 85th minute when Hardie’s clearance cannoned off a combination of Woodley’s Drew and Marlow’s Sutherland and flew into the net.
The referee added eight minutes of injury-time and, although Liam Bushay’s late shot caused panic, Marlow weren’t able to find a way through. United are next in action in their BTC semi-final against Reading YMCA on Saturday.
Reading YMCA 10, Taplow United 0
Taplow United were outclassed by title favourites Reading YMCA on Saturday, losing 10-0 away from home in the Premier Division.
Reading, who moved above Marlow United in the process and are unbeaten in the league all season, notched up double digits against a team whose form has disintegrated in recent weeks.
Taplow’s club website described their performance at Reading as the ‘worst of the season’, labelling it 'embarrassing and humiliating'.
The club’s brief report, which only went on for four lines, added that the display acted as a wake up call to ‘emphasise there is no hiding place at this level once you take to the field’.
Adams netted four for Reading while Donegan completed a first half hat-trick for the home side who now hold a two point lead over Marlow United at the top and have a game in hand over them.
