Maidenhead rower Jack Beaumont completed the set of 2017 World Rowing Cup medals with a silver in Lucerne on Sunday, but says that gold is the target for the World Championships in September.

The Rio 2016 Olympian was part of the men’s quadruple scull that won bronze in Belgrade at the start of the season and gold in Poznan three weeks ago, but had to settle for second behind a strong Lithuanian crew in Switzerland.

Having won his sixth consecutive Henley Royal Regatta title the week previously, Beaumont admits he is somewhat disappointed not to follow up with another gold in Lucerne with crewmates John Collins, Maidenhead resident Peter Lambert and Jonny Walton.

“I’ve got mixed feelings – we came here off the back of a win in Poznan and a win in Henley,”

he said.

“We had really good times, but it has also been a busy period of training and racing. We came here wanting to win gold – having won before we wanted to see what we could do.

“We’re a little bit disappointed to lose so much in the final quarter of the race, but it gives us something to work on. We’ve got two months until the World Championships, but I think we’re in a good place.”

The medal saw Great Britain win the event title, having accumulated more points across the World Cup series than their rivals. GB also topped the overall World Cup standings ahead of New Zealand and Poland.

And Beaumont hopes the crew’s feat has inspired other young scullers to follow in their footsteps.

“It’s great for British rowing that four scullers can be [winning World Cup titles], because it’s something that we never used to be able to do,” he said.

“Hopefully it shows all the kids who are sculling, like we all were as juniors, that it’s something quite cool to do and something we can be successful at.”
