Chris Emmett: 'Windsor RFC should take confidence from Frome victory'

Windsor captain Chris Emmett believes the club can take an abundance of confidence from Saturday’s 36-24 win over Frome into their remaining South West 1 East matches this season.

It’s been something of an unsettled season for the Royals, with head coach Jack Pattinson standing down due to competing work commitments at London Irish as well as mixed results on the field.

However, on Saturday they played some of their best attacking rugby of the season to confidently see off Frome.

The result keeps the side in 10th place, but they’ll be looking to put further distance between themselves and the sides at the bottom when they visit struggling Grove on Saturday.

Windsor succumbed to some heavy losses before Christmas, losing 54-17 at home to Banbury and 43-5 at Witney, but they’ve recovered some form at the start of the new year with victories over Buckingham and Frome, with a narrow defeat at Chippenham sandwiched in between. With several players returning from illness and injury, Emmett is confident the club will be much more competitive in the final 10 games of the season. They’re also well on track to achieve their points target for January.

“It was a very good win against Frome,” said Emmett. “We probably took our foot of the gas in the second half, and conceded a couple of soft tries but overall, it was an impressive game.

“We scored some amazing tries – tries we’ve not been able to put together over this season – and played some of our best attacking rugby. Hopefully we can take a lot of confidence from that into our remaining games.

“There were a lot of things that were pleasing. We got ourselves 36-5 up before they got to the edge a few times and a few tackles dropped off.

“When you are that far ahead, it’s so easy to lose focus because you know the game is pretty much in the bag. But it’s something we’ll learn from and at the end of the day, we got the five points which is something we’re all very pleased about.”

Emmett added: “Our plan coming into this month was to try and get around 14 points. We set that as a bit of a target, and I don’t think we’re too far away from that now.

“Now, we’ve got a very, very winnable game this weekend. Based on the two victories we’ve picked up so far this January, we will take a lot of confidence to Grove. After that, we play a few more teams that are higher up the league. But we are going to have more boys coming back and that’s going to help massively. I firmly believe our squad will only get stronger from here on out.”
