Slough Junior AC and Wexham Court Primary School recognised with England Athletics Inclusion award

Slough Junior AC in partnership and Wexham Court Primary School have been recognised with an inclusion award from England Athletics.

The collaboration was recognised by the athletics body at its south region awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 1.

Slough Junior AC's chairman and head coach, Conrad Roland, has been working with pupils of the primary school to improve their motivation for physical activity and all round movement, agility, balance and co-ordination.

Conrad agreed to work with the pupils after an approach from their headteacher, Miss Mehat, who he said hopes to use the 'power of sport to change the world'.

Conrad said: "Not only are the pupils more able in their sporting capabilities, the sessions have been extended to include after school fitness for teachers, after-school family fun sessions with parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles joining their children from all year groups across the school in fun fitness and movement sessions."

The programme has begun tracking performances such as measured obesity levels, growth and development, tailing programmes to specific individuals. Classroom and parent sessions have also been held to discus key topics of healthy activity and managing obesity.

“It has been an honour and pleasure to work with the teachers and the wonderful pupils at the school," added Conrad.

"They are an inspiration to everyone. We’ve taken massive steps in addressing the growing challenge of keeping young people active, making fun sporting activity an integral part of everyday life, not an exception or special event.

"With the growing challenges of inactivity and the consequent obesity issues amongst young people, this programme has proved what can be achieved, how it can be fun to be active, moving well and enjoying exercise and how that can be integrated within the entire school community, bringing everyone together."
