Maidenhead Athletic Club members challenge themselves to go the distance

Maidenhead Athletic Club (MAC) members continued to challenge themselves over some impressive distances last week, with the inspirational Linda Szulc completing the 100km Race to the Castle on Sunday.

Part of the Threshold Trail Series, this new ultra-marathon started in Kirkharle and finished at the iconic Bamburgh Castle, having taken in the stunning scenery of the Northumberland coast. Linda crossed the finish line just before it got dark in a time of 15hours,10minutes and 45seconds, placing her first in the FV60 age category.

Seventeen MAC members took on the slightly shorter Midsummer Murder 10-mile race through the Hambleden Valley on Sunday. The course took runners through the ‘Vicar of Dibley’ village of Turville and past the ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ windmill. Laurence Miles was the club’s fastest finisher in 1.09.41, with Becky Atkinson next to appear in 1.15.47. Laurence finished second overall out of 137 competitors.

Becky was ninth overall, was the first woman and also the first in the FV40 age category. Lesley Kernaghan was 94th overall and did well to be the third woman home in the FV60 category.

Chris and Rosie Ellis completed the Grafham Water Swim Run event on Sunday, with Chris coming first in the male over 50 category. He was 11th out of 27 overall in a time of 1.04.52, and Rosie was 26th out of 27 in a time of 1.37.47.

Caroline Shrimpton entered her second Canicross 10k race with her dog, Monty, in Wendover on Saturday. Monty helped Caroline finish first in the Vet40 age category.

Chairman Derek Philip-XU presented Sue McEwen with the Chairman’s Cup this week, with Sue having decided to hang up her coach’s coat.

Sue has been coaching both junior and senior MAC members for many years and helped establish a Thursday night junior endurance squad and coached Saturday morning and Tuesday evening sessions. She’s also supported the club in many other ways for decades and the club have wished her all the best in her retirement from coaching while continuing to pull on the MAC vest for runs.
