In the blistering heat, the Hellfire 10k and half marathon in High Wycombe certainly lived up to its name on Sunday.
Seventeen Maidenhead Athletic Club (MAC) took on one of the two distances in baking temperatures over an undulating course.
Runners set off in small waves, with the 10k runners having to contend with 191m of ascent between the third and sixth kilometre alone. The half-marathon included 382m of climbing so it was quite a challenge in the heat.
Pauline Siddons and Dave Waterman were both second in their age categories and Derek Philip-Xu was fifth in his.
MAC’s results of the 10k are Oscar Duran 59.20; Derek Philip Xu 59.48; Richard Duran 1.02.48; Pauline Siddons 1.10.41; Dave Waterman 1.10.44; Mike Sutherland 1.16.21; Steve Overbury 1.16.33; Colin Webb 1.16.50; Marika Karavan 1.27.58; Sandra Koch 1.37.35.
In the half-marathon Chris Lewington (2.08.05) and Linda Szulc (2.34.56) were fourth in their age categories. Anthony Hornby completed the course in 2.08.28; David Waugh in 2.26.05; Sam Gillespie in 2.26.31; Simon Goldfinch in 2.28.00 and Richard Pink in 2.58.18.
After more postponements than they care to remember Elisa Harris and Sam Warren finally completed the Maverick Trail Race this weekend.
In scorching temperatures Sam and Elisa negotiated every taxing hill to cross the finish line 14 miles and 1,883 feet later. They were presented with medals and a goodie bag of snacks, beer and iced coffee.
This weekend’s smart motorway closures on the M4 will be shorter than usual due to separate bridge works taking place in West Berkshire (Junctions 13-14)
