Team England announced its 72-strong athletics team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham yesterday (Wednesday) and several Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow (WSEH AC) athletes made the cut.
The team includes many athletes with previous Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games experience, including Morgan Lake (Robbie Grabarz, WSEH), who'll hope to be in the medal hunt in the women's high jump.
Another athlete who’ll fancy her chances of making it to the podium is club-mate Jessie Knight (Marina Armstrong, WSEH).
She's shown great form in world class fields already this season and has also been selected for the 4x400m relay team having set a new personal best to become British Indoor 400m champion back in March.
Tade Ojora, coached by Joanne Hayes at WSEH AC, has been included alongside Andrew Pozzi and Joshua Zeller to race in the 110m hurdles while Twyford's Zak Seddon (Jeff Seddon, Bracknell AC) will compete in the steeplechase event. Each of the athletes competed in last summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo but each had their own hard luck story.
Seddon, who grew up in Twyford and went to the Piggott School, was also forced to self-isolate in Tokyo after coming in close proximity to someone with COVID, but he stoically refused to blame this for his 14th place steeplechase finish.
Lake was forced to withdraw from the women’s high jump final because of a foot injury having looked in good shape to compete for medals in qualification.
The athletics schedule gets underway on Saturday, July 30 with the marathon around Birmingham's city centre. The track and field athletes will get their Games underway at the Alexander Stadium from August 2 through to August 7.
