Hammerton helps Boyne Hill to six-wicket win over Beaconsfield

Simon Carter

James Hammerton’s undefeated 82not out helped Boyne Hill to a six wicket win over Beaconsfield on Saturday, moving them top of the TVL Division 1 table in the process.

Hammerton held the Boyne Hill innings together as they chased down Beaconsfield’s total of 187 with six wickets and four overs in hand.

On a sticky wicket in the sunshine, Beaconsfield’s total was about on par, with David Heavyside top scoring with 42 and Adam Francis managing 36. Imran Raja (3-25) stuck to the task however, alongside Usman Ilyas and Wasim Maharoof who both took two wickets.

Hammerton knitted Hill’s reply together, his 82 coming from 122 balls, while Ilyas (25) and Sajid Ali (19) made useful contributions to edge the side to their total. Simon Carter (29no) then took the pressure off with some lusty blows to take Hill to victory with four overs still to play.

“We bowled fairly well without being amazing,” said skipper Tom Mellor. “And James Hammerton batted superbly. We felt their score was a little bit underpar, but James was saying the wicket wasn’t quite as good as it looked. It was a bit sticky and not easy against the spinners.

“We always looked comfortable chasing, but it didn’t really feel like that. You always felt that if they got a couple of wickets it could get a bit dodgy, but it never did fortunately. The difference was having that one person batting through the innings, and when people come in and get 20s around him that’s useful too. Simon Carter whacked a few at the end which made it look a bit easier than it actually was, but it was a good chase.”

He added: “With there being no relegation it’s nice to have a bit more on the games rather than being stuck in mid-table after four or five matches with nothing to play for. Hopefully we can keep pushing up near the top. It’s still league cricket. We’re taking it seriously though and we want to win.”

The 22 points picked up see Boyne Hill lead the Division 1 standings with a clutch of other clubs on 51 points. They host Gerrards Cross on Saturday.
