Home Counties Cricket: Shaan scores well as Burnham claim first victory of the season

Shaan Khan

Burnham picked up their first victory of the season as they beat Buckingham Town by six-wickets on Saturday.

Having limited their visitors to 190-4, with Farhaan Khan taking best figures of 2-23 and Shaan Khan and Adnan Malik both finishing with a wicket apiece, they chased their target with plenty of wickets and overs in hand.

Syed Bukhari (33) and Fahad Raja (18) put on 48 for the first wicket before Karan Kumar (31) and Shaan Khan (67no) accelerated the pace to comfortably give Rizwan Nadeem’s side their first win of the campaign. The win lifts Burnham up to 15th ahead of Saturday’s trip to Datchet.

Datchet bounced back from last weekend’s demoralising defeat to Henley to beat local rivals Slough by 54 runs on Saturday.

After coming up 146 runs short of 2019 champions Henley, this was perhaps the perfect match to get Bobby Sher’s side back in the groove.

It certainly proved to be the case. On winning the toss they made 238-5 from their 40 overs, with Billy Mead making 60 before he was run out by Daniyal Akhtar and Steven Naylor blasting 71 not out as the visitors posted a formidable total. Daniel Ward also made 34 not out as he and Naylor stepped on the accelerator in the final overs. Sheridon Gumbs finished with the best of Slough’s figures, taking 1-14.

The loss of Saif Zaib for eight hardly helped Slough’s cause, but Gumbs (17) Ali Ahmed (32) and Akhtar (22) at least steadied the ship, moving them on to 95-4. However, while several of Slough’s line-up got starts and made it into the 20s, none were able to rack up the kind of runs needed to get close to Datchet’s total. The best of Datchet’s figures went to Sulaiman Akhtar, who took 3-41, while Bobby Sher (2-13) and Steven Naylor (2-23) each took two wickets.

Sher’s men will look to build on the victory when they host Burnham this Saturday. Despite winning two of their four matches so far Datchet sit 11th on 51 points, but are only three points off a top four finish such is the congested nature of the league.

Wargrave were bowled out for 151 as Finchampstead beat them by nine-wickets on Saturday.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Imran Malik’s side got off to a dreadful start at the crease, falling to 30-3 before Neal Robinson (29) and Toby Greatwood (39) steadied the ship. Josh Sivier (21) also managed some runs, but from 100-5 they were skittled for 151 in the 37th over. Craig Hodges took 3-29 for Finchampstead, a mark matched by Michael O’Donahue (3-38).

Finchampstead’s reply was serene. Oli Soames’ (43) was the only wicket to fall as they coasted to their target in 25.1 overs.

Gregory Smith anchored them home with 70 not out while Dan Lincoln was also there at the end on 27 not out. Wargrave face a tricky trip to Oxford on Saturday.
