Students, parents and members of the community gathered to mark Teachers’ Appreciation Day at Langley Academy earlier this month.

The Slough and Maidenhead branches of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh UK (HSS UK) brought together teachers, students, parents and members of the community to express their gratitude and celebrate Shikshak Vandan Divas (Teachers’ Appreciation Day) on Sunday, March 1.

In the Hindu culture, teachers or gurus are ‘deeply respected for shaping not only academic knowledge but also character and values’, organisers said.

The celebration looked to inspire youngsters to express gratitude and acknowledge the contribution teachers make to society and individual lives.

More than 20 teachers representing more than 10 schools and private institutions from across Slough and Maidenhead took part in the event.

The event kicked off with a traditional Goddess Saraswati Vandana, a devotional offering to Goddess Saraswati, symbolising ‘reverence for knowledge, wisdom and learning’.

This was followed by Surya Namaskar to promote mindfulness, wellbeing and focus.

Students also showcased traditional Indian games such as Kabaddi and Kho-Kho, highlighting ‘teamwork, agility and discipline’.

As part of the event, students also shared personal video messages expressing their gratitude to their teachers.

Many of the teachers also expressed their appreciation for the celebration and ‘welcomed learning about this cultural tradition’, organisers added.

Oliver King, headteacher at Upton Court Grammar School, expressed his gratitude to the community, and added: “Teaching is one of the hardest jobs, but seeing students use their skills to give back to the community makes it all worth it.

“I am truly honored to be here.”

Jane Welsh, a private tutor of English, said: “I just wanted to also thank you all. What an honour and a privilege it is to be invited and to be part of this event.

“My parents taught me the value of giving back to society. I became a teacher because I wanted to give back. True fulfilment comes from bringing positive change to others.”

Ranveer Sahota, head of Year 10 and teacher of maths at Upton Court Grammar school thanked organisers for the event.
