Windsor 5, Bedfont FC 2

Supporters who braved the elements at Holloways Park on Tuesday evening were rewarded with a feast of festive football, as Windsor served up one of their most convincing wins of the season to advance in the Combined Counties Division 1 Cup.

Bedfont FC were the visitors to Holloways Park for this mid-week cup tie, but they were left bewildered as the Royalists rattled in five goals before half-time.

Bedfont have been tough opponents for Windsor in the past but on this occasion, they were blown away by the host’s impressive play.

The first 20 minutes gave little indication of what was to come as both sides pressed for an opening goal. Bedfont looked strong on the flanks with Cyril Ocansey in particular giving Windsor right back Melvin Kambamba a torrid time.

However, it was Windsor who would draw first blood through their 19-year-old striker Iker Noguera on his debut. He showed great skill to skip past three challenges before smashing the ball into the roof of the net in the 21st minute. Tom McElroy would hit the bar three minutes later, but the hosts would score four more goals before the referee blew for half-time.

In the 35th minute Melvin Kambamba’s driven cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Luke Borsley before McElroy made up for his earlier miss when he raced onto a through ball and rounded the keeper to make it 3-0. With 43 minutes on the clock, Noguera showed his pace to get in behind the Bedfont defence and score Windsor’s fourth, while the cherry on 25 minutes of exhilarating football was applied by Maks Jarzabek who finished off a six-man move by beating two men to score the hosts’ fifth.

The tie had been firmly put to bed before the break but to their credit, Bedfont fought back with two goals of their own in the second half.

The first came barely a minute after the restart when a penalty was neatly put away by Ocansey. The deficit was then reduced to three goals in the 50th minute when Bedfont’s number eight caught the Windsor defence napping to finish off a fine move.

Two goals in the space of five minutes gave the visitors some belief there was still something in the game for them but instead of building on their comeback, they lost momentum when two players were sinbinned for dissent in the 67th and 87th minute.

Playing with 10 men for much of the remainder of the tie proved too much and a frustrating night was capped off when Bedfont’s manager was sent off in injury time.

Windsor and Bedfont are set to meet again for a league game at The Orchard this Saturday in what is sure to be another intriguing contest.
