Megan Halfacree scored “definitely the best goal I have ever scored” as Maidenhead United Women made it back-to-back wins in the FAWNL with what manager Ed Jackson-Norris described as a “professional performance” against Portishead Town at York Road last Sunday.

United sealed a deserved three points at the death with a second goal - a remarkable first-time 25 yard hit from Halfacree – after Macey-Nikiah Walters had opened the scoring in the first half. The Magpies left-back scored after a corner had been cleared and Halfacree admitted: “As soon as I saw the ball come out to the edge of the area, I knew that I was going to shoot. The main thing I was thinking about was to not lean back too much and send the ball out of the ground and into the car park!”

Halfacree admitted: “It was a tough game and probably not our best performance. But it's a good sign when a team is able to grind out a win, even when not playing well. I was also particularly happy that we were able to limit Portishead's chances and keep our first clean sheet of the season.” A game played on a damp and dismal afternoon came to life ten minutes before half time when Izzy Stockton’s reverse pass sent Walters in on goal. The Magpies top-scorer nodded the ball on and then struck home a fine right footed effort from a tight angle to give Maidenhead a crucial lead which they never relinquished.

Maidenhead now go into a period of cup fixtures. On Sunday 13th October United travel to Tier 5 outfit Fulham in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup Third Qualifying Round, looking to match or improve on last season’s best-ever run to the second round proper. The match will be a 2:30pm kick off at Motspur Park, KT3 6PT and tickets are available via https://www.eticketing.co.uk/fulhamfc/ priced £5 for adults, £1 concessions. This will be the fourth time in five seasons United have met Fulham in cup football, the most recent meeting being the Magpies dramatic penalty shoot-out win in the Combined Counties League Cup final last May. Halfacree has played in most of those fixtures against the Whites, the four games so far being decided either by spot-kicks or the odd goal either way, and she is expecting “a tough match. We know Fulham are a well organised team who are good with the ball but we've prepped well in training this week and everyone is looking forward to kicking off our FA Cup run this season.”
