Magpies beat Milton Keynes on penalties to set up final clash with Ascot United

Milton Keynes Dons Women 1, Maidenhead United Women 1 (Maidenhead win 5-4 on penalties)

Maidenhead United are through to the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup final for the second year in a row after overcoming Milton Keynes Dons Women on penalties at Tattenhoe.

The Magpies won the competition for the first time in the club’s history last season, when Ed Jackson-Norris led the side to a 3-1 win over Newport Pagnell Town in the final.

This season they’re through to the county’s showpiece final once again under new management team Dave Kitson and Sean Hillier.

They’ll take on league rivals Ascot United in the final at Beaconsfield Town’s Holloways Park ground on Sunday, March 15. They’re also set to visit Ascot in the league on Sunday, March 8 with that match taking place at the Racecourse Ground.

The Magpies had to come from behind to book their place in the final, with Lyndsey Preston cancelling out a strike from the home side.

With the game finishing 1-1 after 90 minutes a shootout was needed to determine the victors and the Magpies prevailed 5-4 on penalties.

Maidenhead men’s interim boss Ryan Peters congratulated the team on their achievement and has wished them well for next month’s final.

United have had to fight hard to reach the county cup final this season. In the quarter finals they battled past determined Tier 6 opponents Penn & Tylers with a goal in each half from Alex Dover and Izzy Stockton.

They have though been in impressive form of late, moving into the top five in the FA Women’s National League Division 1 South West with a 6-0 away win at Worthing and a magnificent home win over previously unbeaten Swindon Town Women.

They’ve now managed to extend that good form in the cup, with Sunday’s penalty shootout success over their FAWNL Division 1 South East hosts.

Next up for Kitson’s side is a tricky looking trip to sixth placed Abingdon United tomorrow evening (Wednesday) ahead of Sunday’s home game with league leaders Moneyfields at York Road.

The Magpies held Moneyfields to a creditable 2-2 draw in the FA Women’s National League Plate earlier on the season but on that occasion, they bowed out on penalties, losing 5-3.

Megan Fox, Daisy Beard and Ali Hall were on target as Moneyfields beat the Magpies 3-0 in the league at the John Jenkins Stadium in October, so Sunday’s game is sure to be a difficult one.

However, in recent weeks, Kitson’s improving side have shown they’re more than capable of pulling off a surprise result and will fancy their chances on home soil.
