Marlow HC men’s 1sts came from behind in wintry conditions to seal a 3-2 win at Sonning 1sts in their last game before the Christmas break.
Initially the visitors struggled to adjust to the driving ‘freezing rain’, and Sonning capitalised on a couple of turnovers to storm into a 2-0 lead.
But man-of-the-match Chris Goodchild was flattened by the Sonning keeper just before the interval and Chris Sewell started the comeback by slotting home the penalty stroke.
Marlow now looked the more settled and accomplished side, with captain Gary Goodman leading by example with his work rate and defensive discipline. James Ward deservedly pulled the Reds level with 15 minutes to go and five minutes later Tom Gray neatly deflected in Lewis Goodman’s short corner to seal a memorable win.
The victory maintains their top five position going into the Christmas break.
The only other team involved in league action were the men’s 6ths who played out a forgettable goalless draw against Thame 3rds.
Pride of place this week must go to Marlow’s junior girls and boys junior sides.
The u18s and u16s girls teams both won their respective South Indoor Championships, while the club’s u16s boys team did likewise at the competition. It’s the first time the club has had three winners at the event.
All now qualify for the National Championships.
Leaders Maidenhead HC men’s 1sts saw their lead at the top of the table cut to one point by Oxford OBU’s emphatic 10-3 win over Reading 3rds. It’s looking like it might be a two-horse race between the two for the title, after third-placed PHC Chiswick slipped to a 3-0 defeat at Ashford 1sts.
They’re now six points adrift of Chris Brown’s side.
