Suffolk-bound Ward signs off with the winner as Marlow HC beat Witney

James Ward scored Marlow Men’s 1sts’ only goal as they edged out Witney 1-0 in their first match of the season.

The game was closer than they might have expected but Ward – on his last appearance before making a move to Suffolk – got his side’s crucial strike to ensure they opened up with three points.

The Men’s 2nd team also played commendably well in their 3-0 win over Milton Keynes 2nds, Dan Field, Mavneet Girn and Harvey Loretto the players on target.

The Men’s 3rds beat South Berkshire 2nds 5-3 in a thriller, with the 4ths thrashing OMT 3rds 5-2. The 5ths were beaten 4-1 by OBU 5ths and the 6ths defeated Aylesbury 4ths 1-0 at home.

Marlow Ladies 1sts lost 5-2 to one of the strongest sides in their division, Hampstead & Westminster, on Saturday. Both goals were netted by Jane Smith.

Vic Allen scored the only goal as the 2nds won 1-0 against South Berks 1sts, and Levi Rijks and Eleanor Sharpe found the net in the 3rds 2-2 draw with Oxford 3rds.

The 6ths remain on top of Division 7 after their thumping 7-1 win over Wycombe 6ths. Allie Pennant and Sarah Maddern both netted twice to add to goals from Taisa Lane, Emma Kellaway and Krishni Chavda.

Many of the club’s junior sides also got their season underway this weekend with the highlight being the girls u16s’ 7-0 win away at Cambridge City in the Premier League North.
