Hockey round-up: Marlow Men's 1sts miss chance to move third after being held by Old Merchant Taylors

Marlow HC

The Marlow men’s 1sts missed the chance to move third in the table after they were held to a 2-2 draw away at Old Merchant Taylors. Luke Stone and Lewis Goodman were on target for the visitors, who host Oxford Hawks 2nds at Pound Lane this Saturday, 1.30pm push back.

Chris Jackson scored his first goal for the club as the men’s 2nd team were held 2-2 at home by Wallingford 1sts. Jackson gave the home side the lead after a solid first half showing, however, that lead was squandered within five minutes of the second period as Wallingford snatched an unlikely lead. Both sides created opportunities after that and Marlow managed to make one count, fighting back to level. And in retrospect they’ll be disappointed not to have taken all three points after failing to capitalise on a barrage of short corners in the final minutes.

The men’s 3rd team beat Abingdon 1sts 4-2 at home while the 4ths replicated that scoreline to win away at West Hampstead 5ths. The 5ths were also weekend winners, beating West Hampstead 6ths 3-0 away. The 6ths lost 3-1 at Wootton Wanderers 2nds and the Strollers got the better of British Airways 2-1 away from home.

The Ladies 1st team are still searching for their first home win of the season after losing 5-1 to a very strong London Wayfarers side. The 2nds drew 1-1 away at Oxford Ladies 2nds but remain undefeated this season having drawn six and won three of their matches. It sees them sitting third in the Trysports League Premier Division at present.

The Ladies 3rds drew their derby match with Wycombe Ladies 2nds 0-0 while the 4ths were beaten 3-1 at home by Oxford Ladies 5ths. T

The 5ths secured the only win in the ladies section this weekend with a well-fought 2-1 victory over Sonning Ladies 4ths at home

The 6th team were beaten 2-1 by Oxford Ladies 8ths.

Windsor Ladies 1sts regained their foothold at the top end of Trysports Division 1 after clipping the Oxford Hawks’ wings with a 3-2 away win.

The team looked fresh after a week off but it was the Hawks who struck first, taking the lead after Ellen Taylor had already cleared one effort. Nicole McKersie skilfully converted a penalty corner before Bonnage found space once more to drill against the backboard to make it 2-1.

Despite injuries Windsor kept up the tempo and a terrific finish from Lucy Smith gave them a much-needed cushion. The Hawks pulled one back in the latter stages, but they held on for three points.

Tomorrow (Saturday) they head to Banbury Ladies 2nds.

After a week off Windsor Ladies 2nds are at home to Aylesbury Ladies 2nds in a mid-table clash in Division 3.

Mindaugas Spalgena grabbed a brace as Windsor Men’s 1sts drew 3-3 with Ashford Men’s 2nds at home this weekend. Will Biff was also on the Windsor scoresheet. They visit Abingdon Men’s 1sts in MBBO Division 2 tomorrow (Saturday). In Division 5 Lee Waller got Windsor Men’s 2nds only goals as they went down to a 2-1 defeat at Phoenix and Ranelagh Men’s 2nds. They’ll host Marlow 5ths tomorrow (Saturday).

The 3rds were also beaten, losing 4-1 away at Abingdon Men’s 1sts in Division 6. They host Thame 2nds on Saturday.
