Coley's first half goal seals fine win for the Magpies over Wrexham

Wrexham 0, Maidenhead United 1

Maidenhead United picked up their first points of the league season at Wrexham this evening thanks to a fine first half finish from summer signing Josh Coley.

Two of the Magpies’ new boys combined for the game’s only goal in the 33rd minute, with Shaun Donnellan playing in a lovely ball for Coley to fire home.

United often raise their game for the BT Sport cameras and that was the case again at Wrexham, but the home side had their chances in the first half with Luke Young striking the woodwork from a free kick.

The Magpies were more than a match for their rivals, however, and Donnellan came close to the game’s first goal with a stinging strike that Rob Lainton kept out on the half-hour.

The visitors deservedly carried the lead into the half-time break and had chances to add to it in the early exchanges of the second half. Remy Clerima’s unchallenged header was saved by Lainton before the home side managed to mount a serious challenge to the Magpies lead in the closing stages.

Elliott Durrell did well to set up Kwame Thomas, but he couldn’t guide home his header while Jordan Ponticelli thought he’d netted the game’s leveller in the 80th minute only to see it cancelled out by the referee’s assistant’s flag.

Coley was replaced by Dan Sparkes for the final minutes and United had to work incredibly hard collectively to see out six minutes of injury-time, but their efforts were not in vain and the victory lifted them off the bottom of the table and up to 17th in the National League ahead of tomorrow night’s fixtures.
