Marlow RFC turn the tables on Stow-on-the-Wold RFC to record crucial away win

Stow-on-the-Wold 7, Marlow 19

Marlow RFC managed to turn around their fortunes on what looked like being a tough day at the office as they scored three second half tries to come from behind and beat Stow.

Rory Greenslade-Jones’ side came into the fixture off the back of a disastrous second half performance at Reading Abbey in which they relinquished a healthy lead to lose 33-32.

If they were to maintain their hopes of a top three finish they couldn’t really afford a second away defeat on the spin.

But things weren’t looking that great for them on a quagmire of a pitch – and in difficult conditions – when Stow barged through to score under the posts in the fifth minute.

However, the home side failed to make the most of having the wind at their backs in the first half, and when they were reduced to 13 men when two of their players were yellow carded in the 35th and 36th minutes, the visitors claimed the initiative.

Now with a numerical advantage, as well as the conditions in their favour, they hit straight back in the second half with David Potton the man to touch down with Freddie Lewis adding the extras to make it 7-7.

Capiltalising on the switch in momentum they continued to press and took the lead for the first time when Ben Smith bundled over in the 70th minute.

Lewis missed a tricky conversion to leave the result still in the balance, and the visitors needed to show all of their defensive nous when Christian Witney was yellow carded in the final minutes.

But, the home side’s pressure was relieved when Harry Yeomans broke to score the visitor’s third try of the afternoon and Lewis successfully converted it to make the final score 19-7.

Despite their mixed form since the turn of the year Marlow find themselves in fourth place in Souther Counties North, only four points behind Reading and Aylesbury who are level on points in second and third.

Marlow return to Riverwoods this weekend when they entertain Wallingford. Kick Off 2.30pm.
