Jamie Delgado took time out from coaching the world’s number one tennis player to pass on his advice to youngsters looking to forge a career in the sport.
The 39-year-old, who is a member of Sir Andy Murray’s coaching staff, visited the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre yesterday (Wed) (Feb8) where his Living Tennis Pro Academy is based.
Jamie’s brother, Paul, set up Living Tennis back in 2012 to provide top class tennis coaching for players of all abilities, from grass roots to high performance.
Jamie told the Advertiser: “Obviously I travel a hell of a lot to tournaments with Andy but there will be days like today when I can come down, see the players and give them tips.
“I try and help as much as I can and even if they’re just asking questions about how Andy prepares and practices that can be a great help.”
The former Davis Cup player watched on as members of the Living Tennis Pro Academy honed their skills on the centre’s indoor courts.
The academy currently has 44 players enrolled and has forged a link with Claires Court which sees talented young players given the chance to combine their coaching with an education at the College Avenue school.
And Paul says the company want to provide young players with a pathway into the game, whether that is playing professionally, coaching or securing scholarships in America.
He said: “If we get into the danger of saying we’re going to produce the next number one in the world we would be foolish.
“We want to make sure these players are not left on the scrapheap.
“A lot of players at the moment are leaving the country and we’re trying to give them an opportunity to use this academy.
“Claires Court is a big part of what we do here because all the kids have a good education that gives them a back up.”
Living Tennis, which has former world top 100 player Martin Lee and internationally ranked junior Johnny Delgado as directors, also runs coaching sessions for players of all abilities at venues including the Magnet Leisure Centre.
