Cippenham Table Tennis Club held its annual Club Championships over four evenings and the talent at the club was on show as all five events produced different winners.

The pick of the victories was Shae Thakker retaining his Open singles title on day three.

Day one saw the Veterans’ and the Tweenies’ singles events take place. In the junior event brothers Ashley and Oli Shaw, won the preliminary round groups to advance. The semi-finals produced the match of the day as Oli got the better of Anthony Gardener 27-25 in the fifth.

Ashley’s win over Igor Liiko in four games set up an all Shaw final which Ashley came out of victorious, 3-0.

In the Veterans’ final, Ludo Montiel secured the title with a 3-1 over Elroy Hull after both players progressed from their groups as winners alongside Graham Trimming.

Day two was a solidly doubles affair as second seeds Trimming and Hull got the best of top seeds Razvan Bucur and Liiko with a 3-1 victory in the finals after both pairs progressed from their respective groups as winners.

Shae Thakker showed his mettle as he retained his Open singles title on day three despite having not practiced on the lead up to his GCSE’s. The GB Para-international strolled though his group before being made to work hard by Montiel and Paul Baker in the semi-final and final respectively. Thakker claimed his third title in the competition, winning his first in 2015.

Newcomer Joe Barraclough was in a class of his own as he won the final event, the Junior Singles, against a field of twenty players. After winning his group, Barraclough powered his way past Tom Brown and Rachael Iles to set up a meeting in the final with Jaiden Caldeira.

Like his previous opponents, Caldeira was no match for Barraclough who ran out an easy winner.
