Ascot United goalkeeper Sam Gray reached 100 appearances for the club last weekend and with new arrivals complimenting club stalwarts it is a very exciting time to be a part of the club, writes Ben Hart.

Gray capped his personal milestone with a fine display as Ascot came from two goals down to beat Edgware Town 4-2. It’s now five consecutive wins in all competitions for Ascot and manager Jamie Tompkins believes Gray has been integral to their fine start to the season.

“Sam’s been absolutely fantastic and he’s everything you need in a goalkeeper. He’s reliable, always working hard in training, always performing to a high standard and he’s saved us so many points over the time he’s been with us.

He added: “That’s now 5 players in my time who have made 100 appearances for the club and that shows just how committed and loyal this group is. It’s a testament to the environment we’ve created.”

After a successful few seasons built around a core of longstanding players Tompkins believes Ascot are an attractive proposition for players of other clubs.

“We’ve been able to attract players not just because of how well we’re playing but also because of the facilities we have and the environment we’ve created.

“We’re delighted that Denis Nortey and Rashid Hamid have joined the club recently, as well as James Harper.

“We’re always searching for new additions and are really close to signing one or two this week. They’ll compliment the players we already have who have attracted a lot of attention recently and we’ve managed to keep them, so it’s really the best of both at the moment.”

The mood is very positive around the club ahead of a trip to North Greenford on Saturday, who sit four places above Ascot in the table having played four more fixtures than Tompkins side.

“They’ve (North Greenford) started the season really well, they have a young side and are trying to build something positive. They’re high scoring but they’ve also conceded a lot of goals.

“So it should be a good one for the neutral.”
