Slough Rugby Club celebrated the achievements of its youth section at an awards ceremony on Sunday evening, with youth chairman Martin Tilby and club president Ray Gagnon presiding over the event.
All players from the u7s through to the u12s were presented with a memento to thank them for their efforts over the course of the season and there were also three trophies in each age group: most improved player, coach’s player and the player of the season awards.
The John Spandley award for perseverance went to u9s player Noah-Roman Clark while Remmi Contreara Jimenez from the u11s won the rugby club’s junior player of the year title.
The u10s player, Peter Louw won the Mick Curley award for fair play - a new award this season dedicated to one of Slough's stalwart players.
The club's volunteers were also recognised at the ceremony, with u10s coach Laurence Moore named coach of the year and Gareth Morgan picking up the Neville Cup.
Paula Hammond was awarded the Vase and Greg and Christina Fountain were named joint winners of the Colin Williams Cup for going above and beyond the call of duty for the club.
Junior volunteers received gift boxes while coach and clubhouse volunteers all received a thermos cup.
Club President Ray Gagnon said it was a privilege to be asked to speak at the awards.
He said: “On Sunday I attended the Youth Awards Ceremony at the club and was very pleased to see it so well attended by both youngsters and parents.
“I was also very impressed as to how smoothly the ceremony went, with all youngsters receiving an award, some more than others due to individual skills.
“What was especially good to see was that a new award, the Mick Curley Fair Play award, which is awarded for the player who exemplifies the Rugby Values and plays fair, being awarded for the first time.
“This went to Peter Louw of the Under Tens, well done Peter. It is good to see that these values are being instilled at such a young age and the award being something every young player can work toward.
“Despite not knowing the names of all, I should like to thank all helpers and volunteers without whom there would be no Youth Section.
“Well done to everyone concerned.”
The youth section of the rugby club starts the new season on Sunday, September 3.
