Welling United 1, Slough Town 1
Slough Town’s name will be in this afternoon’s FA Cup third qualifying draw at Wembley, but the Rebels have a bit of work still to do if they’re to continue their run in the competition after being held to a 1-1 draw by Welling United on Saturday.
The Rebels made five changes from their previous league match with Dan Roth, Henry Ochieng, Jared Myers and Jordan and Reiss Greenidge replaced by Tarik Gidaree, Tyrese Dyce, Brian Nelson, Jaiden Drakes-Thomas and Josh Adepoju. EDS keeper Harry Upstell was also named amongst the substitutes, but this was a young and inexperienced team for the trip to Welling.
Slough had come into the clash off the back of a difficult 4-1 defeat to Torquay United at Plainmoor.
Player manager Scott Davies always expected a tough afternoon against a Welling side he expected would be better than their lowly Isthmian Premier Division position suggested.
And so, it proved as the hosts fought back for a 1-1 draw at Park View Road, their equaliser coming deep into stoppage time from Jack Paxman’s penalty.
The Rebels were within minutes - or even seconds - of executing a very accomplished away performance at Welling, having taken the lead late in the first half through Peter Ojemen.
Pressure late in the first half paid off when Johnny Goddard’s free kick took a slight deflection into the path of Ojemen who buried the chance.
To that point, the game had been relatively even and without too much goalmouth action. The closest either side came to scoring before Ojemen’s strike was a backheeled attempt by Welling’s Ruben Shakespeare that Adam Desbois was able to save.
The second half was a better spectacle for supporters, with Slough’s Josh Adepoiu dispossessing his marker but firing wide at the near post in the 57th minute.
It looked like Davies’ young side had done enough to earn their place in the third qualifying round, but in second half stoppage time Dan Roth committed a foul in the area and Paxman stepped up to bury the spot kick past Desbois.

The result means the two sides go to a replay at Arbour Park on Tuesday evening. However, by then they’ll have the carrot of knowing who they might face in the next round, with the draw set to take place this lunchtime (1pm, Monday).
Posting on social media after the match, Davies said: “A replay on Tuesday it is. Extremely proud of the young lads that started or came on for us today. Welling is always a tough place to go we knew it would be difficult with so many injuries, but we get another chance at it. I’m sure it’ll be another close battle.”
Assistant manager Tony Fontenelle also reflected on a close encounter in his post-match interview with the club at Park View Road.
