Burnham drop down to sixth after Boxing Day derby is postponed

Joe Gritt

--

Burnham FC were another club to have a relatively quiet festive period following the postponement of their much-anticipated clash with local rivals Flackwell Heath.

The Blues went into the Christmas period off the back of a three-game winning streak, capped off by their 3-0 home win over Holmer Green on December 21, a result which briefly lifted them up to fourth in the Hellenic Premier Division.

But a waterlogged pitch meant their trip to Wilks Park on Boxing Day was called off and results elsewhere, most notably for Binfield and Brackley Town Saints, have seen Paul Shone’s men bumped back down to sixth in the table.

This Saturday they’ll get back to competitive action against when Brackley visit The Gore.

Joe Gritt and Sam Ayres were the men to fire Burnham to their comfortable 3-0 win over Holmer, with Gritt getting his name on the scoresheet twice.

He helped them seize the initiative by powering a header past Ryan Latter before Ayre’s fine finish made it 2-0 on the hour mark.

A second header from Gritt capped off a fine display from Shone’s improving side and the manager will be confident the Blues can build on their recent form in the coming weeks.

After playing fifth-placed Brackley they visit Easington Sports on Saturday week before welcoming another top four contender, Shrivenham, to The Gore on January 18.
