Marlow Hockey Club’s teams played the final matches of their respective seasons at the weekend, with the men’s 1st team earning a hard-fought and entertaining 4-3 win over Oxford Hawks.
Marlow trailed 2-1 at the interval, with only Sam North’s goal to show for their efforts, but they bounced back well after half-time to win the game with strikes from Chris Sewell, Tom Gray and North again.
Marlow’s victory owed a lot to the performance of goalkeeper Max Chawner-Davis, who produced a man-of-the-match display between the sticks. It means Marlow have secured third place in the table with the rest of the season now suspended over the coronavirus and unlikely to be finished.
The Men’s 2nd team eventually took control in the second half as they put Oxford Hawks to the sword. Despite trailing 2-1 at the break James Ashburner, Tom Lilly (two), Dan Bradley, Dan Field and Oliver Cadinouche blasted them to a comfortable win.
The 2nds went through the campaign undefeated at home and finish the season in fourth place.
Elsewhere the 3rds were beaten 2-1 at home by Ramgharia 1sts, the 4ths lost 8-0 away to Witney 4ths and the 5ths defeated Windsor 2nds 3-0 away. The 6ths drew 2-2 with the Slough Despondents.
The Ladies 1sts put an end to their recent run of losses with a 2-0 away win at Teddington.
Kerri Smith calmly lifted the ball into the net to give them the lead before Ellie Yeomans doubled their advantage from a penalty corner.
The 2nds played out a goalless draw with nearest rivals Oxford 2nds at home and the 3rds were also held 0-0 by Wycombe 2nds. The 4ths lost 3-1 away at Oxford 4ths and the 5ths beat Sonning 4ths 2-0 away. The 6ths, runaway league leaders, beat Oxford 6-1.
