The suspension of the league season due to coronavirus means Windsor Ladies 1sts have one hand on the title following their 4-1 win over Oxford Hawks Ladies 5ths on Saturday.
With captain Freya Hayter returning to the side the ladies won the match with a fine second half display. Lucy Smith netted their opener before Elle Gatehouse, Hayter and Maxine Bonnage scored after the break to complete a comfortable win.
It leaves the side three points above Milton Keynes at the top of Division 1 with matches – and training – now suspended for the forseeable future.
All three of the Windsor Men’s teams suffered defeats at the weekend, with the first team losing 2-1 at home to Abingdon Men’s 1sts. Michael Jones netted their only goal.
In Division 5 the 2nds were comfortably beaten 3-0 away by Marlow Men’s 5ths and the men’s 3rd team were beaten 5-0 by Thames Men’s 2nds in Division 6.
A statement from England Hockey this week said that all nationally run hockey activity was being suspended until at least April 15, meaning the season is now effectively over.
“The season is now unfortunately over and whilst the decision on what that means for teams next year is not yet decided in terms of league position, no more games will be played,” said a statement.
“It's been a great season with lots of fun, hockey action and friendships. We look forward to welcoming you all back with our HockeyFestival to kick off the new season.”
