Goalkeeper Grant saves Marlow FC a spot in next round of FA Cup

Simon Grant

In an hotly-contested affair at the Frimley Green Recreation Ground, Marlow FC beat Frimley Green 4-1 on penalties to progress to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Having gone a goal behind and a man down inside the opening half after Jay Welch’s dismissal, Devontae Romeo equalised for Marlow in the 74th minute to set up a nervy finish to the game. But with time running out there were no further goals and a penalty shootout was needed to separate the two teams.

Goalkeeper Simon Grant was the man of the moment as he saved the hosts’ first two spot kicks before Brown, Clark, Ovenden and Bossman dispatched theirs to fire the Blues into the next round of the tournament

After the game, Marlow boss Mark Bartley said on Twitter: “Tremendously proud of the side tonight. To come back from a goal down with 10 men, and dealing with sub standard officiating, against a strong and committed Frimley side.

“All this with 10 players missing through injury and 1 through suspension. Roll on Friday’s draw.”
