Maidenhead Royals lift play-offs trophy after win over Silverbacks

Dedan McLaughlin

The Maidenhead Royals lifted the play-offs trophy for the Wessex Division 3 basketball league with an outstanding victory over the Swindon Silverbacks earlier this month.

On Sunday, May 15, the Royals showed great composure throughout the game and with a great shooting display by their MVP player Dedan McLaughlin won the game by 58 to 43.

Both teams started the game strong but the Royals quickly took the lead finishing the first quarter up by six points. The Silverbacks fought back in the second quarter but it was not enough to turn the momentum and take the ascendancy.

The Royals locked down the Silverbacks with a solid zone defence at a decisive third quarter allowing them to score only five points. Both Seppe Leysen and Ronel Dorimain dominated the paint with their blocks whereas Dedan and Gaye Gandega at the wings gave further advantage to the Royals with a series of steals that widened the score (44-28).

The fourth quarter opened with a spectacular three-pointer from their captain Dan Wesolowski that took away Silverbacks’ hopes for any recovery. Dedan and Ronel continued their offensive surge throughout the quarter sealing the victory for the Royals and sending the trophy to Maidenhead.

It was an impressive performance all round from the Royals’ team with Dedan leading the game scoreboard with 23 points (four three-pointers) and Ronel following close behind with 16. Some equally strong performances offensively came from Seppe with seven points and Dan and Gaye who obtained six points each.

The Royals were superb defensively with support at the bench coming from Bartek Rybka, John Iverson and Alex Simantirakis allowing them to stay fresh and ahead of the game despite three absences (Alek Marcinkiewicz, Irek Kanczugowski, Oskar Barabasz).

It was a great finish to a fantastic season for the Royals with their captain lifting the playoffs trophy and bringing it back to Maidenhead to delighted chairman Hardy Kapoor.
