A new secure cycle parking hub is set to be built in Windsor next year after planning permission was granted.

The new hub, which will be built next to Windsor Leisure Centre is due to open in Spring next year.

Funded by Active Travel England, the new hub will provide those who cycle with a space to park their bikes when using the leisure centre.

The new hub’s location on Stovell Road is ‘one of the main cycling routes’ into Windsor town centre and is near to The National Cycle Network Route 4.

Windsor and Maidenhead council has engaged with cycling organisations in the area to make sure that the design of the facility is what people ‘want and need’.

The project also addresses concerns from residents about the security of the current cycle parking at the leisure centre.

The new hub will be completely enclosed and will have a security entry system, providing 36 spaces as two-tier racks, Sheffield stands, cargo stands, and a pump and repair stand.

Those using the new parking hub will also be able to store their belongings and helmets in lockers.

To book the parking, people will use an app which includes a secure ID verification process to make sure that only they are able to get in and out of the facility.

Once they are signed up, people can book spaces in advance at any time, costing £1.50 per day.

The hub will also feature CCTV with 24/7 monitoring and app customer support.

Construction work on the new hub is due to begin early next year.

Councillor Geoff Hill, Cabinet Member for highways and traffic, customer service centre, and employment, said: “This new secure cycling hub is great for cyclists in Windsor and thanks to the valuable input from local cycling groups such as the Windsor Cycle Hub, and Windsor Ascot & Maidenhead Active Travel, we’ve been able to create a design that reflects what’s needed.

“Creating safer and more convenient walking and cycling routes, empowering more people to reduce their reliance on vehicles for short journeys where possible, not only supports our work to combat climate change, but gives residents what they need to improve their health and wellbeing.”
