MK Dons' fringe first teamers school Windsor in Berks & Bucks Senior Cup quarter-finals

Windsor came up against an MK Dons side packed with fringe first teamers on Tuesday night, and unsurprisingly bowed out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. The 5-0 scoreline was a little harsh on the hosts, who’d prevented their League 1 opponents from scoring in a more even first half showing.

But Brandon Asante-Thomas’s 52nd-minute penalty opened the floodgates at Stag Meadow, and manager Mick Woodham admitted to being a little despondent about the errors which contributed to their own downfall.

“First of all you’ve got to look at the side that MK Dons brought to us,” he said. “I spoke with their manager and chairman and that side was as strong as it possible could be for this competition. They’ve set their stall out and said they want to win this competition. They brought a very good side, it was everything we expected it to be.”

Hugo Sobte’s goal was peppered with shots in the first 45 minutes, but the Windsor defence held firm, and Woodham said it was a positive team talk from him at the break. But the wheels came off after the referee awarded what he called a soft penalty in the 52nd minute.

“No one in the ground knew what that was for,” he said. “But after that we’ve contributed to our own downfall.

“You can say that we were beaten by a very, very good side, but I expected the boys to keep clear heads in the second half and not make the mistakes that they did. It turned into a tough evening for us.”

The big games continue to come thick and fast for Windsor, with Wantage visiting Stag Meadow tomorrow (Saturday), ahead of the side’s trip to Thatcham Town in the semi-finals of the league cup on Monday night.

“It’s a quick turnaround,” Woodham said. “But that’s football and I’d rather have these big games to play than see our season peter out. We’ve had a very good season but we can’t stop now. The players can’t just say ‘I’ve done my bit’ because there is plenty of football still to be played.”
