Swimmers brave Bray Lake in 'unforgettable day' for Thames Hospice

More than 150 swimmers braved the waters of Bray Lake for an ‘unforgettable day’ in Thames Hospice’s Open Water Swim Challenge.

Sunday’s event (June 9) saw people don their wetsuits and, cheered on by scores of spectators, plunge into the water to take on challenges up to 10km.

The intrepid swimmers, many of whom have directly experienced care at the hospice, have so far raised £44,000 in vital funding which could help it fund a nurse for a year.

Jess Seymour, who swam in memory of her husband, said: “My husband Matt passed away here at the hospice last August and I have done a lot this year to raise money and awareness of the amazing work they do.

“Today, I swam 500m and have raised £400 and next year I will be back to challenge myself to swim the 1k distance.”

Nikki Pickford, another swimmer, joined the event in memory of family member Francesca Nardini.

“Francesca spent her last few days at Thames Hospice in March and I know she would find it really funny I have been in the lake,” she said.

“It’s a place that is very dear to me and my family and I want to do as much as I can to raise money and awareness because it’s such an incredible place.”

After crossing the finish line, participants were invited to enjoy a hot drink from hospice’s café by Bray lake.

As a charity, Thames Hospice receives much of its funding through donations and enormous fundraising efforts of the community.

Thames Hospice’s Events Fundraiser Emma Andrews says, “The swimmers were absolutely amazing, not to mention all the spectators cheering from the lakeside.

“Everyone’s energy, enthusiasm, and incredible spirit made our event into an unforgettable day.

“Everyone made waves and showed what it means to be part of an amazing community.

“It was very moving to hear all the stories about why swimmers and supporters chose to swim and fundraise for Thames Hospice.”

Organisers wanted to thank Bray Lake Watersports, the Shanly Foundation and Love Branding. There was also ‘a massive thank you’ to staff, volunteers and suppliers who helped deliver the event.
