Double victory for Slough as youngsters shine at cricket tournament

Two of Slough’s young cricket teams triumphed at the Chance to Shine Street Cricket National Finals last week.

Chance to Shine is an independent cricket charity that works in state schools and communities across the country, giving children the chance to play cricket, 'grow a love for the sport, learn vital life skills, improve wider wellbeing and fulfil their potential.'

In this tournament, the Young Adult Final was won by a team from the weekly Street Cricket club in Chalvey. This club provides free weekly sessions in community venues such as schools, halls and places of worship.

The programme caters for all abilities and requires no specialist equipment. Nationally, 91 per cent of participants come from areas with fewer opportunities to access organised sport.

Representing the county at national level, the club finally secured victory after finishing as runners-up for four consecutive years.

The U12s Slough team, made up of players from two clubs in Slough and nearby Langley, also claimed the title in their age group.

Adding to the town’s achievements, a Slough Girls’ team reached the final in their competition and finished as runners-up.

Munir Umer from Berkshire Cricket said: “We’re extremely proud of all the boys and girls that took part. Both our winners were from Slough Street clubs.”
