Raunds Town FC 1 v 2 Flackwell Heath FC
The Heathens booked their place in the first round proper of the FA Vase on Saturday after defeating Northamptonshire based side Raunds Town FC.
The Heathens welcomed back young Khalid Simmo into the side after he was cup-tied for the FA Cup. Manager Marcus Richardson made one other change to the side as Phil Pryor dropped out for Marcos Ushiro-Lumb.
The Heathens started well. Troubling the home side who play one step below the Reds. Simmo looking especially dangerous out on the left flank.
The deadlock was broken after 27 minutes and it was Simmo who picked the ball up on the left-hand side of the Raunds penalty area. He jinked and shifted the ball onto his left foot and hit it straight at the keeper who struggled with the power of the strike. It found its way into the back of the net.
The Raunds' goalkeeper Ash Foulger should’ve done better. Flackwell continued to dominate and created plenty of chances before the half-time whistle. The Reds lacked a bit of quality in the final third of the pitch. At half-time, it was 1-0 to Flackwell.
Throughout the second half of the tie, Flackwell created chances galore. They just couldn’t find the back of the net.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Heathens were punished for not taking their chances. Raunds Town number 10 Matt Gearing hitting a lovely strike which got Raunds back into the game.
The Heathens rolled the dice and brought on Sinclair and Bossman for the final period of the game. Probing the Raunds' backline. Then with three minutes to play Flackwell got a free-kick midway into the opposition half.
The ball was whipped in by Josh Baines and Raunds cleared their lines. It fell back to Jack Taylor who took a good first touch and hit a rocket into the top left-hand corner of the net.
Foulger could only watch the ball go past him. The full-time whistle went and Flackwell progressed to the next round of the FA Vase.
On another day they might’ve been punished for not taking their chances earlier on in the game.
Flackwell now turn their attention to the biggest game in three seasons as they play Slough Town FC at home on Saturday afternoon in the FA Cup.
