Ardill’s late strike enough for Goring

GORING UNITED booked their place in the next round of the Berkshire Trophy Centre Senior Cup after edging past hosts HOLYPORT RESERVES 2-1 in a hard-fought contest last Saturday.

The first half was tightly contested, with both sides creating half-chances but struggling to find a breakthrough. Goring goalkeeper Will May pulled off a point blank save to keep the scores level at the interval.

Goring struck first on 60 minutes when Matt Hayden delivered a pinpoint free kick from the right and Sully Akers rose highest to head home.

Holyport hit back soon after, capitalising when their forward was afforded too much space in the area, firing low past May to make it 1-1.

Goring’s task became tougher when they were reduced to 10 men when George Scoffham was sent off.

With penalties looming, Goring found one last moment of quality deep into stoppage time when a Hayden free kick caused chaos in the box, and captain Ed Ardill reacted quickest to make it 2-1 in the 92nd minute.

On Wednesday of last week, HENLEY TOWN crashed out of the tournament after going down to a 4-0 defeat at home to WESTWOOD WANDERERS.
