Review: Macbeth at South Hill Park

A year ago, I was impressed by this company’s version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and I was equally impressed with this mesmerising and enthralling production of Macbeth. 

Performed by an extremely strong cast of excellently depicted characters on a relatively simple, but well-conceived and well-lit set made up of moveable standing stones and rocky outcrops, director Joe Malyan and his team created an atmospheric and, at times, visually cinematic piece of theatre with a subtle and deferential nod to ‘Games of Thrones’.  This was further enhanced by the use of an original haunting soundtrack and a beautifully melodic chorus.

As mentioned, the acting was of a very high standard, with Max Puplett’s  stunning portrayal of Macbeth as gripping, as it was powerful, as was Laura Hannawin’s captivating and feisty Lady Macbeth.  

This may be one of Shakespeare’s tragedies but it is yet another triumph for South Hill Park.
