A newly published illustrated book is providing a ‘snapshot’ of the cultural workers that make up Slough’s creative scene.

Publishing apprentice Shanique Miller completed her final chapter with the official book launch of ‘The Arts in Slough’ on Wednesday, September 17.

The event, held as part of Resource Productions’ Creative Collective Meet Up and the Slough Cultural Revival Project, enabled Shanique to reflect on her journey in creating the publication.

She said: “I’ve always had a love of literature and the written word, and having now experienced the process of producing a book, my hope is to be an editor in the publishing industry, bringing books with meaning to people who need them.

“Hopefully, The Arts in Slough is the first of many.”

Shanique is not the only Slough resident showcased in this book, as it celebrates the work of artists and their contributions to the town and its creative community.

Sbba Siddique speaks about Knit Your Socks Off supporting local people, while Desree shares her work with future poets and spoken word artists, and photographer Mike Swift captures the eclectic town for future generations to see.

Slough mayor Councillor Siobhan Dauti and council leader Councillor Dexter Smith joined the book contributors for an evening of cultural appreciation and networking at Plus X Innovation.

Resource Productions is an Arts Council England national portfolio organisation, focusing on creatives in the Slough area and helped set up 'Slough Cultural Revival’, a landmark initiative to make the town a centre for creativity and innovation.

Slough Cultural Revival project lead, Rob Deeks, who is also CEO of Together As One, said: "Resource Productions have created a beautiful and engaging snapshot of many of the artists and creative groups that make up Slough’s amazing creative sector — one of the town’s most special features.

“Future generations will be able to look back at this book as a wonderful record of the people and groups who helped define our creative scene."

Elevating Slough artists is at the forefront of this new publication, aiming to get the wider community involved in the creative activities available to them.

Resource Productions’ Creative Collective welcomes those over 18 and interested in the arts to participate in workshops, networking sessions and engage in 1-1 sessions.

Resource Productions training and development manager, Siobhan Hardy, said this project has been a ‘labour of love’ for arts and culture in Slough and training up future creatives in the area.

“Shanique has grown so much while producing this book, and it’s been a pleasure to help her develop her knowledge and skills in publishing and watch her confidence build,” she added.

“The distinction she earned by the end of her L3 Publishing Assistant apprenticeship with LDN Apprenticeships is a testament to the hard work and dedication she has put in to produce this book.

“I have no doubts that Shanique will be a positive addition to any company in the publishing and editorial area, as her passion and attention to detail are at such a high level, and she brings a fresh perspective to everything she does.”
