After strolling through their first-round match against Camberley, Desborough found Loddon Vale a tougher proposition in the national Denny Cup this week.

The points ended up being shared so it came down to shot difference, with the Maidenhead team creeping home by seven shots. They’ll now play Atherley at home on December 8 for a place in the next round.

Rink scores: Men’s Singles; Andrew Essex 19 – 21; Ladies Singles, Nicola Jones 20 -21; Mixed Pairs, J Skelly, D Simpson 18 – 14; Mixed Triples, J Mayne, K Roper, J Mc Guinness 26 – 15; Mixed Fours, M Bignell, H Jones, M Essex, S McAlister 15 – 20.

It was also a busy weekend for Desborough on the friendly front, with their first match against county rivals West Berks IBC.

At one stage it looked like West Berks might run away with it, but Desborough dug in and eked out a 13-shot victory (140-127). With both teams winning on four rinks, an honourable draw was declared.

The rinks skipped by John Davis and David Webster both returned winning scorecards, but the battle for top rink honours was between the rinks skipped by Roger Wyatt and Tony Buckley. It went to the latter alongside Keith Roper and Jill Locker.

Rink scores: R Bridgen, J Bosley, R Wyatt 23 – 8; K Roper, J Locker, T Buckley 26 – 11; V Wyatt, C Northover, D Perriman 15 – 20; L Monaghan, B Adams, J Davis 14 – 12; R Palmer, P Winstanley, J Monteiro 13 – 26; S Stewart, J Palmer, I Bond 16 – 22; P H-Smith, D Isaacs, R Fabry, 14 -16; P Ewers, P Smith, D Webster 19 – 12.

Next, they played the London Welsh Bowling Association and, after another entertaining contest, Desborough won 109-66. The home side won on five of the six rinks for a 43-shot advantage.

Four of the skips returned similar winning scorecards but there was no argument over top rink honours which went to Abby Yanna, Paul Winstanley, Tina Scherer and the ever popular Welsh Wizard, Brian Jones, who won by 21 shots, 28 -7.
