The Boundary Arms pub in Pinkneys Green has been listed for sale for £775,000.
The watering hole has been closed since 2021 and was the subject of redevelopment plans to turn it into two semi-detached homes.
Earlier this year community members launched a campaign group, The Friends of the Boundary Arms, with the aim of re-opening the venue.
The pub’s redevelopment plans have been withdrawn but the sale listing with property consultants Kempton Carr Croft says the site has ‘residential development potential’.
The venue has been designated as an Asset of Community Value by Windsor and Maidenhead council.
This means the pub cannot be sold for six months if a community interest group requests to be treated as a potential bidder within the next six weeks.
Mark Newcombe, vice chair of the Friends of the Boundary Arms Committee, said: “It’s a lot of money obviously. With The Craufurd Arms we had to raise half a million pounds in six months and this is going to be a little bit more than that.
“But we don’t know if it will get any offers at that price. The best the community group can do is get grants and loans and shareholding fundraising and if they can get anywhere near the asking price they can make an offer.”
He added: “The kicker on the legislation is even if they do get market value funding together, the owner still doesn’t have to sell to the community group.
“He’s within his rights to sell to whoever he wants after the six-month period. It just means he can’t actually sell it for six months.
“But it’s kind of positive news because it could be bought out by another company or a private investor and remain as a pub which would be great.”
The Friends of the Boundary Arms group were due to meet on Thursday night to discuss its next steps.
