High jumper Morgan Lake became the first British woman to clear the two-metre mark as she finished on the podium at the Diamond League Final in Zurich on Wednesday.

Lake has been in fabulous form so far this season, both internationally - winning the recent Diamond League meeting in London - and domestically as she claimed another commanding victory in the National Championships in Birmingham.

Throughout the season she’s been getting closer to the 2m mark and was a whisker away from clearing it at the London Stadium back in July when she also finished top of the leaderboard.

She couldn’t claim the Diamond League Final crown on Wednesday, finishing third overall, but she set a new benchmark for British athletics in the event.

Lake entered the competition early and soared over every marker until she hit the landmark height. In clearing it she became only the 86th woman in history to clear it and joined the ‘two metre club’.

The Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow athlete is now being coached by Yannick Tregaro, and his influence has pushed her into the bracket where she can now compete for medals against the very best in the world.

The 28-year-old’s previous personal best of 1.99m was set in February 2023 and there was a mixture of shock and joy on her face as she cleared the bar at her first attempt. It should give her great confidence heading into the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo which start in just over a fortnight.

“It’s crazy. I was so in the moment and then as soon as I cleared it I was just so emotional because it is something I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I’m so, so happy,” Lake told the BBC.

“Tonight, I was like ‘I’m going to enjoy it and just jump as high as I can’. It just shows me what I’m capable of if I just believe in myself.”

Lake finished third behind the Olympic and world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh (2.02m) in second and Australia’s Olympic silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers who claimed the Diamond League trophy with a magnificent leap of 2.04m.

After three consecutive first-time clearances as lower heights, Lake needed three attempts to go clear at 1.97m to keep herself in the competition, and she then fulfilled a lifetime ambition of going clear at 2m. She’s now focused on trying to do something similar in Tokyo in a couple of weeks’ time where she’ll hope to be among the front-runners for the world title.

Having finished fourth in Budapest two years ago, she’d love to step onto a global podium for the first time.

“The main thing between now and Tokyo is to keep the body healthy and don’t try and change too much,” said Lake.

“I think I could have jumped 2.02m with my two-metre jump, so it’s just trusting my coach and what we’re doing and do the same again, really.”
