Slough Town boss Scott Davies admitted his side had been outclassed by Worthing during Saturday’s surprisingly heavy 4-1 defeat at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium.
The Rebels have been in excellent form of late, second only to leaders Dorking Wanderers over the past 10 games, and they’ve taken some notable scalps along the way.
However, Worthing wouldn’t be one of them and Davies’ side were very much second best from the moment Teddy Jenks fired the hosts in front after only five minutes.
There was a period of parity, when the game might have swung back in their direction, but Worthing took full control in the 15 minutes before the interval.
Jack Spong scored from the spot to make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute before Jenks grabbed his second of the game in the 38th to take the game further out of Slough’s reach. A fourth goal from George Cox a couple of minutes before the interval rubber stamped Worthing’s authority and control and effectively put this match to bed before the players went off for half-time.
The Rebels did eventually manage to get on the scoresheet in second half stoppage time, when Wiktor Makowski swept home confidently for his 17th goal of the season.

Johnny Goddard was also denied by the Worthing keeper during an improved second half display. But Adam Desbois – who received treatment late in the half for an injury but managed to play on – was also kept on his toes and denied Jenks his hat-trick with a fine save.
Worthing have lost only once at home all season and played like a team capable of challenging for promotion – if not the title – particularly in the first half. They’re now up to fourth, two points off second placed Torquay United.
Slough weren’t at their best during last week’s goalless draw with Horsham, but this was a surprisingly flat and disjointed display from a team who’ve been very competitive of late, no matter who or where they’ve been playing.
Davies said the players need to forget about it and move on, so it’s perhaps fortunate they have another game at AFC Totton tomorrow evening (Tuesday) to try and get this display out of their system.
The result leaves them 15th in the table on 41 points. They remain 12 points above the drop zone and 11 off the play-off places and appear likely to finish their campaign in mid-table, unless they can reproduce their excellent form over the last 10 matches prior to this one.
Posting after the game, Davies said: “Got outclassed in every department today and extremely well beaten by the superior side.
“4-1 flatters us, should’ve been double that, at least. The boys have been superb for two months so the quicker we forget about it the better. Thanks to our travelling fans.”
