Maidenhead Rowing Club holds 'on the water' rowing day for Invictus Games athletes

Maidenhead Rowing Club held an ‘on the water’ rowing day and ‘scratch regatta’ for Invictus Games athletes and their family and friends last week.

The 48 attendees included 20 athletes who’d competed at the Invictus Games in 2023 and 2025 as well as their friends, families and rowing friends.

The day started with a welcome reception with coffee and cakes followed by an introduction and briefing before the guests took to the water for their first session.

The session was a huge success and only bettered by an incredibly competitive scratch regatta that followed - the attendees demonstrating that their competitive instincts are never very far from the surface.

Organiser Nick Steel, who is a Maidenhead Rowing Club member and adaptive rowing coach and Invictus coach, said: “Maidenhead has a well-deserved reputation for its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere and this event was the perfect example of this.

“We gained new friends and supporters and from the feedback at the end of the day, new members too.”

The Invictus Games is an international multi-sport event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans.

It uses the power of sport to inspire recovery and support rehabilitation. It was founded by Prince Harry in 2014.

A key part of this is creating and maintaining connections with communities across the UK.
