Benson care home told to improve

A CARE home in Benson has been given a “requires improvement” rating by the Care Quality Commission.

Benson House Care Home, in Churchfield Lane, provides nursing, residential and dementia care for about 65 people, on a permanent and short-stay basis.

Inspectors rated the home “good” for being effective, caring and responsive but rated “requires improvement” in the safe and well-led areas, giving it an overall rating of 62 out of a possible 100.

Their report said: “This inspection was prompted by concerns raised in relation to end of life care, medicine management and staffing.

“During the inspection we found evidence to support our concerns relating to the management of medicine.

“We found two breaches of regulations in relation to good governance and safe care and treatment as medicines were not always managed well.”

Inspectors also said improvement was required in the safety and leadership categories.

But they did acknowledge that the home provided “good standards” of care from staff who “knew their needs”.

Residents also told inspectors that the staff are “brilliant”.

A spokesman for Benson House said it was pleased to be rated “good” in three areas and was working to enhance its oversight and governance systems.
