An evening of Sufi and Qawwali music visits the Curve Venue in Slough tomorrow (Friday).

Asian Arts Agency will present An Evening of Sufi and Qawwali Music with Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal.

Qawwali is the most popular form of Sufi music and became internationally famous thanks to Nusrat Ali Khan who performed at the WOMAD festival and collaborated with Peter Gabriel’s Real World label.

Performer Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal was born and raised into a qawwali singing family in Faisalabad, Pakistan and is a student of Ustaad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

Chahat and his team perform a traditional style of qawwali and their repertoire includes performing qawwali in languages from Urdu, Punjabi and Persian.

The qawwali performances pay tribute to Sufis such as Baba Bulleh Shah (Kasur) and Miyaan Muhammad Baksh (Mirpur, Azaad Kashmir).

Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal made his UK debut in July 2023 and has now performed at several high-profile events including the South Bank Centre in London, Big Johns Birmingham Mela, Eid in the Square at Trafalgar Square and Caird Hall in Dundee.

Sarfaraz Hussain is the tabla player with Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal and is also the lead singer at the shrine of Bulleh Shah.

Bulleh Shah was one of the most popular Punjabi poets and saints, in Kasur, Pakistan and Sarfaraz is the third generation in his family to perform at the shrine.

The evening is presented by the Asian Arts Agency, an arts development agency based in Bristol, promoting and supporting international contemporary and traditional South Asian music and arts for more than 15 years.

Tickets are £16 and still available for the Curve Venue event on Friday, September 27 at 7.30pm.
