Slough Sikhs dedicated Monday evening’s homeless aid to one of the most revered human rights defenders of the 20th century, who had links to Slough.
This month marks the 30th anniversary of the disappearance and martyrdom of Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra.
It is a reminder of the price he paid for exposing human rights abuses during the dark period of state oppression in Punjab in the 1980s and 90s.
Bhai Khalra was a Sikh activist who uncovered the illegal abduction, torture, and killing of thousands of Sikhs.
His investigations led to the exposure of mass cremations and extrajudicial killings in Punjab.
Bhai Khalra shared a special connection with Slough, having stayed with a family in Chalvey during his visits to the UK.
That home later became a centre for Sikh activism raising awareness about human rights issues in Punjab and uniting the diaspora in their advocacy efforts.
Slough Sikhs dedicated their feeding of homeless people in Slough High Street this week to Bhai Khalra, working in collaboration with NishkamSWAT (which helps disadvantaged communities).
NishkamSWAT, along with Slough Outreach, provide warm meals, essential supplies, and support services to those in need every evening on Slough High Street.
A spokesperson for Slough Sikhs said: “Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra stood for truth, justice, and the rights of the voiceless – values Sikhs strive to uphold.
“His legacy continues to inspire generations of Sikhs so it was important for us to honour him.
“Many of the service users were introduced to the remarkable life and sacrifices of a man who challenged darkness with light.”
