Housing development in Slough aims to provide ?local homes for local people?

People in Slough will be given priority for a new housing development, according to a director of Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd.

The Express was given a tour of the construction site in Ledgers Road yesterday (Monday).

Work started in August and by Easter 2017, 73 apartments and homes will be built as part of the Slough Urban Regeneration (SUR).

The development will feature one and two bedroom flats as well as two and three bedroom houses.

Alastair Gourlay, a director of Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd, said ‘local homes for local people’ is an ‘important issue’ for the SUR.

Though it cannot have a say on who buys the houses, Help to Buy will be available across the scheme to give a helping hand to first time buyers with priority given to people who live in Slough.

The new housing site, which also includes 24 plots set aside for social housing, will be called Milestone, named in honour of a nearby 18th century milestone on Bath Road.

Cllr James Swindlehurst, deputy leader and commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal at Slough Borough Council (SBC), said: “The planning stage for this project started about three years ago so it is quite exciting to see things starting to happen.”

Milestone is the first residential scheme under SUR.

Previously called the Slough Regeneration Partnership, the group was renamed in autumn and is a joint venture between SBC and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd.

It aims to deliver projects across the borough, including 104 houses at Wexham Nursery in Wexham Road and 10 family homes at Upton Road, Langley.

It is also involved in the Community Sports Facility (CSF) at Arbour Park, the leisure centre in Farnham Road and the refurbishment of the Ice Arena.

Together, Cllr Swindlehurst said he hoped the new housing and facilities will help alter people’s perception of Slough.

“We as a council are really trying to change the borough’s reputation,” he said.

“It is going to be a long process but Slough has always been about change.”
