Huggard and Miles help side triumph in challenging conditions

HENLEY Tennis Club’s ladies team recorded a 3-1 Berkshire League Division 8 win against Wokingham in freezing but sunny conditions last Saturday.

The fixture was only possible thanks to the club’s newly built artificial clay courts, which proved invaluable on a weekend when icy hard courts forced the men’s fixture to be cancelled.

Fiona Huggard and Lizzie Miles opened the match with a hard-fought win against Wokingham’s first pair, clinching a deciding tie-break 1-0 after the scores had been level at 6-2, 5-7.

The duo followed this with another impressive performance, recovering well after losing the first set 6-2 to take the second 6-4 and once again showing composure to win the deciding tie-break 1-0.

Ana Roberts and Pam Saker made a dominant start against Wokingham’s second pair, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. They were unable to repeat that form in their second match, however, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Wokingham’s top pairing.
